World Mobile Congress 2014: What To Expect

World Mobile Congress (WMC) 2014 is around the corner, but what does it signify? What will it bring? Here is what to expect on the Monday, 24th February event.

The Big-timers

  • Samsung Galaxy S5. It's time for an annual refresh of Samsung's flagship device. The South Korean tech giant announced an event called "Unpacked 5", which points to the new Galaxy S5. It is reported to have a fingerprint sensor and improved LED flash.
LG's recently unveiled G Pro 2.
  •  LG G Pro 2. Although it has already been unveiled, LG will bring it to the WMC. With a quad-core processor and front camera flash, will it steal some shine off the Galaxy S5?
  • Android Nokia. After Windows Phone fails to gain market share, Nokia is reportedly switching to Android for its "X" phone.
  • ZTE Grand Memo II LTE. The Chinese company will unveil the 6-incher and a Firefox OS 1.3 device.
HTC seems quiet for WMC, but is expected to launch a replacement for its flagship HTC One in March. Apple is absent from WMC, as usual.

Wearables
  • Samsung Galaxy Gear 2.  With the failure of the first Galaxy Gear, Samsung will be eager to amend its mistakes. It is reported that not only one, but multiple Gear models will be unveiled. It might also spot the Tizen operating system.
Icis: A fashionable alternative to Google's Glass.
Information displayed does not block field of vision.

2014 is widely regarded as the year of wearable tech. Although Google Glass got some new frames and prescription lenses, it is unclear whether it will be available at WMC. It also gained a fashionable competitor in Icis.
We will not see Apple's iWatch as they are absent from WMC.

The Rest
  • Blackphone. It will be based on a "security-oriented" Android build called PrivatOS, enabling users to send and receive secure texts, files, phone calls and video chats. NSA-proof smartphone, it seems.
YotaPhone uses e-ink to provide 60 hours of reading.
  • YotaPhone. The e-ink Android phone will be brought to the show. It spots a 4.3 inch LCD display with 720p (HD) resolution on one side, with an e-reader on its other side, thus providing 60 hours of e-book reading time with always-on notifications.
Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg will be WMC's main keynote speaker.
