Unveiled: Samsung announces Gear 2 & Gear 2 Neo, ditches Android!

Although the first Samsung Gear was released just 5 months ago, Samsung announced its replacements today, a day ahead of Galaxy S5's release. It makes sense, since the first Gear was half-baked and did not sell well.

As speculated earlier, Samsung unveiled 2 models-- Gear 2 and the camera-less Gear 2 Neo. Samsung had also thrown away the "Galaxy" moniker to differentiate them from other Android devices. The new Gear will run on Tizen OS, a linux-based operating system built by Samsung and Intel.

According to Samsung, the new Gears will have 2-3 days battery life (up from 1 day), albeit having a smaller, 300 mAH battery (down from 315 mAH). Samsung also claimed that it will have an "enriched application ecosystem" and changes to its external design. Here are some photos:

The Gear 2 now spots a camera on its body (original Gear has camera on the wristband), alongside an Infrared Blaster. The microphone is now on the body too, moved from its original place on the wristband clasp. Its home button is just below the display. The changes enable users to swap wristbands.

The 1.63-inch touchscreen remains with a 320x320 resolution. Other specifications include an upgraded 1GHz dual-core processor, 4GB internal storage, 512MB of RAM, infrared capability, heart rate sensor, pedometer, S Voice, 2-megapixel camera that records 720p video (absent on Gear 2 Neo), 300 mAH battery and IP67 certification for water and dust resistance. It can also act as a music player, thus enabling users to leave their smartphones at home while jogging (played through bluetooth headset). Samsung also claimed that it will be compatible with "more than dozens" of Galaxy smartphones.

The Gear 2 weights at 68g while Gear 2 Neo weighs at 55g. They will be sold starting from April and their prices have not been announced.
